There’s a new face behind Mehfil Indian Bistro, and he’s bringing more than great Indian food to the table. New owner RJ Kumar is putting community at the heart of the restaurant, creating a place where locals can gather, enjoy a flavorful meal, and feel appreciated.

The name “Mehfil” is especially fitting. The word is associated with a gathering, a place where people come together and enjoy one another’s company. That’s exactly the spirit RJ hopes to cultivate.

One of the clearest examples is Mehfil’s Tuesday Crew Night, a weekly tradition created specifically for the people who work hard to keep the Truckee community running.

Every Tuesday, first responders are invited to enjoy one of four complimentary entrées with their choice of garlic naan or roti and basmati rice. Hospitality staff and other members of the local workforce can enjoy the same meal for just $15. That includes hotel and resort employees, restaurant and hospitality workers, teachers, cashiers, retail employees, bank workers, and others who make up Truckee’s hardworking local crew.

In a mountain town, that recognition carries special meaning. Truckee’s restaurants, hotels, resorts, schools, shops, banks, emergency services, and other local businesses rely on people who work long days, weekends, holidays, busy winter mornings, and packed summer afternoons. They serve visitors, help customers, respond to emergencies, keep businesses open, and help the community function day after day.

For RJ, Crew Night is about something simple: taking care of the people who take care of Truckee.

A Welcoming Spot for Locals and Visitors

The restaurant is open from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day except Wednesday, so after kids’ activities, a late class, work, or simply a long day, you can still pick up a satisfying meal without resorting to fast food or having to shop and cook.
