With the latest four-mile stretch completed this summer, Truckee Donner Land Trust’s work on the Donner Lake Rim Trail now offers runners, hikers, bikers and equestrians 14 miles of trail stretching from Donner Summit down into Truckee. The Donner Lake Rim Trail will be more than 20 miles when complete, circling Donner Lake. Currently the northern stretch, reaching from Castle Valley on Donner Summit to the West all the way to Northwoods Boulevard in the east, is open and available to explore.
The trail meanders through old growth forest and open vistas of Donner Lake and the Sierra Crest, around giant granite boulders and through fields of bracken fern and flowers. Trailheads at Castle Valley, the top of Donner Lake Road, off of Glacier Way and on Northwoods Boulevard provide starting and ending points, and the trail links to many other routes for adventures to suit anyone.
