A narrow and twisting drive up Old
Highway 40 (the original road up and over Donner
Summit) from Donner Lake will lead you to multiple
opportunities for hiking and rock climbing, a
spectacular overlook of Donner Lake and Rainbow
Bridge, and the evocative symbolism of
4,000-year-old, basalt-carved petroglyphs. Ten miles
west of Donner Summit on Interstate 80 is the Big
Bend Visitor Center, with early emigrant history.
